Even though the first wife of Akbar, Ruqaiya Sultana Begum, is fondly remembered for the exalted position she enjoyed in Akbar’s life, on many occasions her image is characterized with shades of grey. Like in that of the daily soap Jodha Akbar in Zee tv which displays Ruqaiya as an arrogant, proud, self-centred and overconfident persona shedding almost negligible light to the self-respectful, well-educated, and politically active traits of her character. She is believed to be the closest companion of the King apart from his chief wife, and very much indulged in sports activities. Her portrayal in the serial is not only that of an arrogant and proud woman (qualities attributed exclusively to the males in those times), she is often being pitted against the character of Mariam-uz-Zamani, who is the embodiment of compassion yet dignified confidence, something that Ruqaiya is portrayed to lack to a great extent. As per the serial she is always portrayed in the frame of negativity, and ever competing with Mariam-Uz-Zumani for the love of Akbar. The envious nature that she explicitly showcases is nothing but the natural jealousy that any wife would display if and when she has to share her husband with so many other women. Despite being in such a powerful position she seems to be the victim of the polygamy nature of the patriarchy who subjugates women’s desire in seeking marital bliss on their own term
