However, this frequently overquoted and inaccurate view contrasts starkly with the advice of the leading researchers who advocate early intervention with dysfluent speakers (Starkweather 1987, Rustin et al. 1996). The resource provider, whether the speech and language therapist in the clinic or the manager who is prioritising services, is faced with a dilemma about whether all young pre-school dysfluent children should be treated as advocated by Starkweather (1987) or whether children should receive speech and language therapy only when it is clear that they are not going to improve without it. Variability of service provision therefore exists across districts with some opting to direct their resources to pre-school children and others providmg services only for the school- age child. There is little data available to support either of these strategies.
