و هناك عدّة أسباب أدّت إلى ظهور ثقب الأوزون و تآكل طبقة الأوزون في الغلاف الجوي ، أوّل تلك الأسباب هو إستخدام المركّبات العضوية التي يدخل في تركيبها كل من الكلور ، و الفلور ، و الكربون . و تعرف باسم مركّبات الكلوروفلوركربون . و تستخدم تلك المركّبات في عبوات المبيدات الحشرية ، و عبوات تصفيف و تثبيت الشعر ، و مزيلات العرق ، و أغلب مستحضرات التجميل . و تستخدم كذلك في الولايت المتحدة في تجهيز أساسات المنازل و العبوات المستخدمة لمكافحة و إطفاء الحرائق ، و تستخدم تلك المواد كمبردات في أجهزة الإرسال و الإستقبال و الحاسبات . و تلك المواد تتحلّل إلى ذرات الكلور و الفلور التي تؤدّي إلى تحويل غاز الأوزون إلى أكسجين . و قد عقدت عدّة مؤتمرات دولية للحفاظ على البيئة و أكدت على ضرورة إيجاد بدائل لتلك المركبات ، و هو ما تسعى الدّول الصناعية الكبرى إلى عمله ، حيث أنّ الإتجاه السائد في الصناعة الآن هو الحفاظ على البيئة .
