In November the main Russian forces were withdrawn north of the Danube,
leaving garrisons in Varna and in the Dobrudja.
Meanwhile in Transcaucasia Paskevich had been more successful. On 24
June the Black Sea port of Anapa surrendered after a combined land and sea
attack by Russian forces. This freed Paskevich from the fear of operations
by Circassians in his rear. He himself advanced on the Turkish fortress of
Kars, controlling the main route from Transcaucasia into Asia Minor, and
captured it on 5 July. He then turned north and stormed Akhalkalaki on 7
August. Turning westward he inflicted a serious defeat on the Turks near
Akhaltzikhe, the principal remaining fortress threatening Transcaucasia, and
stormed the city on 28 August. The main army then withdrew to winter
quarters in Georgia, leaving garrisons in Akhaltzikhe and Kars.
In February 1829 Wittgenstein was replaced in command of the European
theatre by General Diebitsch, who received large reinforcements. The first
major Russian success of the year's campaigning was the capture of Silistria
on 30 June. Diebitsch's main attention was, however, concentrated on the
coastal sector. Between 17 and 19 July the Russians crossed the river
Kamchyk, south of Varna, surprising and routing the Turkish forces, and
within a week had passed the eastern end of the Balkan Mountains and
captured the port of Burgas. The army's advance along the coast was
supported by naval forces under Admiral Greig. Diebitsch's position was
extremely exposed, for large Turkish forces remained in his rear at Shumen.
He strengthened it by turning westward to defeat the Turks again at Sliven,
before marching south to Adrianople. Greatly overestimating the Russian
forces, and impressed by Diebitsch's rapid movements, the governor
surrendered the city on 20 August. Peace negotiations began in Adrianople
and were successfully concluded on 14 September.
Meanwhile, in the eastern theatre Paskevich resumed his offensive. Between
25 June and 2 July he crossed the difficult Soganli mountains,
outmanoeuvring his opponent and defeating numerically superior Turkish
forces. On 9 July the important city of Erzurum surrendered. During July and
August the Russians won some further successes in the area to the north,
between Erzurum and the Black Sea. Still more victories were prevented by
the conclusion of peace.
