ApproachThe project aims to achieve a sustainable reduction in the frequency and impact of labour disputes. To do so, both capacity-building for core institutions, and systemic reform to open up new pathways for dispute resolution, are needed. The project will achieve these through three workstreams across three years, with a break clause after the first year. Output One: Prevention - Increased awareness of labour dispute mechanisms and options for avoidance of labour disputeThe scoping study indicated that common causes of disputes included poor communication and mutual suspicion between employers and employees, and a lack of understanding of the labour law. JBWA has been working to address these issues through promoting awareness of labour rights and obligations at the enterprise level and the uptake of labour dispute resolution tools. ASI will provide financial and technical support to JBWA to enable them to provide more and better technical support to business to enable them to prevent work place disputes and to intervene quickly and cheaply when they do occur. Prevention occurs through providing interested firms with legal support so that they understand local labour laws and their responsibilities and rights. The provision of standard contracts help smaller firms, in particular, which do not have HR and legal departments to enable them to create their own effective contracts.
