Mass Media and Gender
Jiang Hong
This article observes mass media through “gender”, the theoretical kernel of feminism. It consists of three sections. In the first section, the author analyses several commonly seen male supremacy parols in media from their content, including: 1、Regard female as “the second sex”; 2、Objectify and materialize the female; 3、Differentiate “Sacred women” and “Evil women” with the standard of the male supremacy. In the second section, the author traces the origin of the male supremacy parols in media from social politics, economy, history and culture. The article says that the male supremacy parols originate from the sexual discrimination in both eastern and western history and culture, and they still exist in the current cultural sense. Meanwhile they have some relations with the prosperity of commo dity culture. The susceptibitity to the gender of Chinese women is weaker than that of western women. In the third section, the author observes and studies emphatically the impact of media on the sense of the gender, and the impact is mainly composed of the following aspects: 1、The media forms the stereotype of the gender; 2、The media eliminates “the voice” of those inferior groups; 3、The male centered sense of value supported by the media is internalized into the female “collective unconsciousness”.
