U.S. Immigration Update for F-1 Students and Dependents:
Admission Date to U.S. for New Students
Form I-20 Updated with Earliest Admission Date
Documents Required for Admission to the US in F-1 Status Reminder
Dear ELS Counseling Partners,
ELS provides this update on US Immigration to assist you and your students with changes, clarifications and resources for travel to and from the United States.
F-1 Regulations and Admission to the US in F-1 Status:
The United States regulations governing F-1 status do not permit a new student (or his or her dependents) to enter the United States sooner than 30 days before the “Program Start Date" on the Form I-20, even though the student may be issued an F-1 visa up to 120 days before the Program Start Date. Prospective students should be instructed that they (or their dependents traveling on an F-2 visa) will not be permitted to enter the United States if they appear at a port of entry sooner than 30 days prior to the Program Start Date, despite having a valid F-1 visa.
Earliest Admission Date on Form I-20:
New Forms I-20 issued after July 8, 2016 will print out with an Earliest Admission Date in the Program of Study block, which is calculated 30 days before the Program Start Date. New Students and/or their dependents cannot enter the United States before the Earliest Admission Date on the Form I-20.
Documents Required for Admission to the U.S. in F-1 Status:
Students must have the following documents in hand at the Port of Entry when seeking admission to the United States:
Passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry;
Form I-20;
Valid F-1 visa (for students entering the U.S. for the first time the name of the school on Form I-20 must match the name of the school on visa page);
Evidence of financial support sufficient to cover the expenses identified on the Form I-20;
Proof of having paid the SEVIS; and.
The U.S. Address of where he or she will live, e.g., Homestay Address, Dormitory Address, or other Local Address.
As always, thank you for your support of ELS Educational Services, as we work together helping students achieve their educational goals.
Sincerely,
