It could be there'll be more interest this year from non-Muslims due to the popularity of the 5:2 diet. It so happens I'm near the end of a 36-hour fast (not that I make a habit of it) for health, rather than religious, reasons.

Of course, the author of the 5:2 diet does mention the religious aspect regarding it.
Ramadan is generally paradoxical for most people - mostly those of Asian descent - however, as many just binge-eat once opened so negate many of the health benefits.
A Very British Ramadan on C4 was fairly impressive in how it showed the customs of the majority of Muslims in this country - mostly sub-continental - where there is an ironic gluttony during the sacred month and the the very English traditions in Norwich, where the fast is broken with soup. A far healthier option and in keeping with the true Ramadan spirit.

Why no figure for how many people will die unnecessarily because of this ritual?

I've never heard of anyone who has died from fasting, if there's a number I'm sure it'll be a small one anyway. You're not supposed to fast if you don't feel well/pregnant/etc-etc
