Distribution of Chloride ions : Chloride is the most common major anion and occurs naturally in all types of waters. It is good indicator of groundwater quality .More chloride concentration in groundwater may indicate it’s mixed with sewage or sea water. Chloride in drinking water is generally not harmful to people until high concentrations are reached. In large amounts, it increases corrosiveness of water and, in combination with sodium it gives the water a salty taste (MPCA, 1999). Figure shows the variation in Concentration where it is about 25.5 ppm at the northern part of the area and it increases up to 1384 ppm southward. It is noticed that chloride distribution is highly conformable with salinity distribution. The higher concentration can be attributed to the effect of the marine sediments bordering the area. While the lower concentrations can be attributed to the recharge from the surface water system in the area.
