وأشار سموه، خلال افتتاحة اليوم الاحد مشروع الطاقة الشمسية في الجامعة الهاشمية، "شمس الهاشمية"، الذي يعد المشروع الأول من نوعه في الأردن والمنطقة بقدرة 5 ميغاواط ، "إن كلفة استيراد الطاقة تبلغ 23% من الناتج المحلي الإجمالي كما تشهد نموا متزايداً"؛ داعيا إلى التركيز على التنوع في أشكال الطاقة في المستوردة والمنتجة محلياً لتحسين كفاءة استخدام الطاقة في القطاعات المختلفة ولضمان وصول إمداد آمن لخدمات الطاقة لكافة شرائح المجتمع وقطاعاته المختلفة.
وأضاف سموه: "لابد من التذكير بأكاديمية الأراضي الجافة الساعية لتنمية البادية الأردنية والمناطق الجافة التي تشكل حوالي 70% من أراضي المملكة، وتعزيز الأمن الغذائي بالأردن، والسعي الحثيث للقضاء على الجوع في كل مكان".
بدوره قال رئيس الجامعة الهاشمية، الدكتور كمال بني هاني، إن الجامعة عملت عبر هذا المشروع على تحقيق مفهوم "استقلالية الجامعة في الطاقة" ليكون ذلك ركيزة لزيادة الإنتاجية وتحسين الأداء فتم خفض فاتورة الطاقة فيها، مؤكدا أن الجامعة تسلحت بالابتكار، وباشرت مسيرة العمل بوضع رؤية ثاقبة للانجاز.
وأشار مدير المشروع، ومدير دائرة المشاريع الهندسية، الدكتور شاهر ربابعة، إلى أن المشروع تميز من حيث حجمه ونوعه بالإضافة إلى قيمته الاقتصادية، وتم تصميمه بطريقة وظيفية وجمالية باستخدام مفاهيم التخطيط الحضري التكنولوجي Urban Technology؛ لينسجم مع بيئة المكان ويجعل حرم الجامعة صديقاً للبيئة.
وكرم سمو الأمير الحسن، في ختام الاحتفال، عددا من الأشخاص والجهات الذين ساهموا في إنجاح هذا المشروع. كما حضر سموه على هامش الزيارة اجتماع أكاديمية الأراضي الجافة التي أسستها الجامعة بدعم من سموه وبالتعاون مع المجلس الأعلى للعلوم والتكنولوجيا، والمركز الدولي للأبحاث الزراعية في المناطق الجافة "إيكاردا" ICARDA. وتم قبول 30 طالبا خلال الفصل الثاني 2016/2015 في تخصص بكالوريوس الموارد الطبيعية في الأراضي الجافة
