MUSLIM AID PART OF UNIQUE COALITION OF CHARITIES CAMPAIGNING FOR EDUCATION FUND
Muslim Aid reaffirmed its support for the ‘A World at School’ education campaign by becoming part of a 27-strong coalition of international NGOs calling for greater investment in education.
The appeal was made just days before the Oslo Education Summit, set to take place on 7th July, and after a policy paper from UNESCO revealed ‘inefficient humanitarian and development aid systems’ exclude children in conflict from education. The statement calls for a commitment to establishing a Global Humanitarian Fund and Platform for Education in Emergencies at the summit.
With the unfortunately imminent failure of the millennium development goal to ensure that all children receive primary education by 2015, it is estimated that 58 million children are currently out of school, 20 million of which are victims of conflict and natural disasters.
The ‘A World at School’ campaign promotes education for all. For decades, Muslim Aid has made education a pillar of its work in the fight against poverty. In 2014 alone, Muslim Aid built learning spaces and schools in Myanmar and Sri Lanka, and ran education programmes in Bangladesh, India, Cambodia and Pakistan, reaching over 200,000 people. Muslim Aid also reached 5,522 children across 17 countries through its Rainbow Family Child Support programme which provides orphaned or impoverished children with education and other essentials.
A spokesperson for Muslim Aid said: “We look forward to the outcome of the joint statement and for the issue of education provision for those in need to be highlighted.
Working alongside other international NGOs for such an important cause as part of the ‘A World at School’ campaign has been exciting and rewarding. We are fully committed to its cause and invite others to show their support in any way they can.”
