أن التنمية المستدامة هي التنمية التي تلبي حاجات الحاضر دون المساومة على قدرة الأجيال المقبلة على تلبية حاجاتهم أي أن المساوات والعدالة بين الأجيال وهي واحدة من العوامل المطلوبة للتنمية المستدامة .
أن التنمية المستدامة هي الاستعمال المثالي الفعال لجميع المصادر البيئية ، الحياة الاجتماعية والاقتصاد للمستقبل البعيد مع التركيز على حياة أفضل ذات قيمة عالية لكل فرد من أفراد المجتمع في الحاضر والمستقبل.

هناك محطات مهمة شهدها العالم في مجال التطور من الفكر البيئي المجرد الى فكر التنمية المستدامة الذي يتضمن الارتباط الحتمي للبيئة بالتحولات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية واهمها:-
1- في عام 1989 طلبت الجمعية العامة للامم المتحدة عقد اجتماع عالمي لوضع ستراتجية لايقاف التأثيرات التي تلوث البيئة في سياق تعزيز الجهود العالمية لتطوير ونمو واستدامة البيئة بكل دول العالم.
2- وكرد فعل للطلب في (1) اعلاه عقدت قمة الارض في البرازيل/ريودوجانيرو في حزيران/1992 (مؤتمر الامم المتحدة المعني بالبيئة والتنمية) والذي نتج عنه(الاجندة21) والتي تمثل منهاج عمل منذ انعقاد المؤتمر وللقرن الواحد والعشرين للحكومات، وكالات التنمية، منظمات الامم المتحدة والمنظمات الغير حكومية في كافة المجالات التي تلوث
