Studiesoncreativityinparticipantswithautismgenerallyshowimpoverishedperformanceaswellasdeficientcomprehensionofmetaphoriclanguae.However,verylittleisknownabouttheabilitytogeneratemetaphorsinthispopulation.Thepresentstudyexaminesverbalcreativityinadultswithautism-spectrumdisorder(ASD)throughtasksthatrelyonnovelmetaphoriclanguage.SeventeenadultswithASD(meanage=21.06)and17typicallydevelopingpeers(meanage=22.71)participatedinthestudy.Amultiple-choicequestionnaireconsistingofconventionalandnovelmetaphorswasusedtotestcomprehension,andasentencecompletionquestionnairewasusedtotestgenerationofcreativelanguage.Resultsshowsimilarperformanceincomprehensionofconventionalandnovelmetaphorsinbothgroups,whereasadultswithASDgeneratedmorecreativemetaphorsrelativetothecontrolgroup.Scoresontestsofvocabularyandnamingcontributedtothepredictionofconventionalmetaphorcomprehension,whilescoresontestsofmentalflexibilitycontributedtothepredictionofnovelmetaphorcomprehension.Inaddition,scoresonatestofnon-verbalintelligencecontributedtothepredictionofmetaphorgeneration.ThestudypointstouniqueverbalcreativityinASD.Keywords:autism,novelmetaphors,executivefunctioning,metaphorgeneration
