It seems like you really want this very dark Kaneki to be true. Although Kaneki may have saved Shuu because he thought he might be useful in the future, I feel like his reason was more likely either:
-To save Tsukiyama, no strings attached (This would mean that he still holds affection for his old friends)
-To cut off all ties with his old friends by doing one last service for them (This would mean that he acknowledges his old bonds but is moving on for himself now)
I think it is unrealistic to think that Kaneki threw him off, thinking that Shuu was nothing more than a "worm"; I think he thought seriously about the situation and his relationship with Shuu when making his decision. Chie Hori's quote where she drew attention to the fact that Kaneki could have killed Shuu seems to be a hint by Ishida as to Kaneki's current mindset. Sure we can hope he's really dark now or hope he still cares about his friends, but I think we should definitely consider Hori's words seriously in any speculation.
