بدأ مسيرته السياسية سنة 1954 وذلك بمعارضته لسينغمان رهي. دخل البرلمان كنائب سنة 1961.خاض الانتخابات الرئاسية سنة 1971رغم المصاعب التي كان يفرضها الحكم الدكتاتوري الذي قام بحبسه وتهديده ومن ثم منعه من العمل السياسية لأكثر من عقد من الزمن. تم الحكم عليه بالإعدام سنة 1980 وذلك عقب انقلاب في السلطة ونشوب موجات احتجاج في معقله السياسي، ثم تم تخفيف حكم العقوبة إلى عشرين سنة حبس وذلك عقب تدخل الولايات المتحدة التي عاش فيها بالمنفى. عاد إلى كوريا الجنوبية سنة 1985 كزعيم للمعارضة، وخاض كلاً من انتخابات 1987 و1992 الرئاسية ولكنه خسر فيهما، ولكنه نجح بالفوز بانتخابات سنة 1997.
