werThe Hollywood Ten were screenwriters, actors, directors, musicians, and other U.S. entertainment professionals who were denied employment in the field because of their political beliefs or associations, real or suspected. Artists were barred from work on the basis of their alleged membership in or sympathy toward the American Communist Party. The list eventually contained more then ten names but it started with just ten names in 1947. In 1947, the House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), which was chaired by J. Parnell Thomas, started an investigation into the Hollywood Motion Picture Industry. The HUAC interviewed 41 people who were working in Hollywood. These people were interviewed voluntarily and were known as friendly witnesses. During their interviews, they named nineteen people who they said held left-wing views. Ten of those people refused to answer any questions during the hearings thus became known as the Hollywood Ten:- Alvah Bessie, screenwriter Herbert Biberman, screenwriter and director Lester Cole, screenwriter Edward Dmytryk, director Ring Lardner Jr., screenwriter John Howard Lawson, screenwriter Albert Maltz, screenwriter Samuel Ornitz, screenwriter Adrian Scott, producer and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, screenwriter I have given you a web site that gives a small bio on each of the Hollywood Ten, the second web site gives you more information about the Hollywood Ten.
