This study assessed the early literacy skills of 36 children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the spring of their final year of preschool. The children were assessed on three different commercially available early literacy assessments: the Test of Preschool Early Literacy; the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening - PreK; and the Preschool Individual Growth and Development Indicators. Results showed a high degree of variability for the children, with a marked trend towards results at the top and the bottom of the score range. Results showed the children to have overall strengths in the area of print awareness and overall weaknesses in the areas of oral language. Results between aspects of early literacy on the different early literacy assessments were highly correlated, suggesting that these children can be reliably assessed. Results were also highly correlated with a measure of general functioning. Implications for early literacy assessment and instruction for these children are discussed.
