For example, it may be possible to use a colchicine treatment designed for small seedlings with haploid plants directly
out of anther culture. Alternatively, established procedures using larger plants may be used. In
wheat and other cereals, chromosome doubling is induced by initially culturing anthers on a medium
containing a low concentration of colchicine. In addition to leading to the direct regeneration of
homozygous dihaploids, the inclusion of colchicine in the medium for the first few days of culture
caused a decline in the number of albino regenerants (Barnabás et al., 2001).
