عود تأسيس نادي الإتحاد إلى اجتماع مجموعة من اعيان مدينة جده وهو أول فريق ينشأ في المملكة . وتعود القصة إلى حدوث خلاف في الفريق بعد عام من تأسيسه بسبب اعتراض مجموعة من اللاعبين السعوديين على تواجد اعداد كبيرة من الاخوه السودانين الذين استحوذو على امكانهم في الفريق . إلى أن انشق فريق اخر نادي بالوطنية وأصبح أقدم فريق سعودي مازال قائما على قيد الحياة حتى اليوم.

ولقد عرف الإتحاد بلقب (العميـد) منذ مراحل التأسيس الأولى حينما تغنى الشاعر محمد درويش بالعمادة ضمن قصيدة إتحادية جاء فيها :-

فريق الإتحاد بكم أشيد *** أنت في البلاد غداً عميدُ
وهو يعد ثاني نادي جماهيري بعد نادي الهلال حسب اخر تصويت جماهيري[/color]

أسباب تكوين شعبية الإتحاد

يعد نادي الإتحاد أكبر الأندية شعبية في المملكة . وتعود القصة إلى مباراة لعبها الفريق أمام فريق أجنبي مكون من عدد من الجاوا (الشرق آسيوين) في بدايات تأسيس النادي . عندما نشأ تحد كبير بينهما إلى ان اجتمع الفريقان في أول مباراة لفريق سعودي أمام أجنبي راهن فيها الفريقان على أن يحرق المهزوم خشباته الثلاث . كان الجاوا واثقين جدا من الانتصار لكن الإتحاد تمكن من الفوز بهدف نظيف . ومن وقتها بدأت الناس بالتغني بهذا الفريق والتشجيع له خصوصا كونه أول فريق وطني .

بدايات الإتحاد وأولى لقاءاته

لعب الإتحاد لأول مرة مع فريق البحري في عام 1352هـ (1932) وكان طابع هذه المباراة الخشونة المتناهية وهي أول مباراة تقام بين البحري و الإتحاد وقد اصيب في هذه المباراة لاعب الإتحاد هارون فيرا بكسر كما أصيب أحمد قشلان من مشجعي الإتحاد بسكته قلبية وعلى أثر ذلك تقدم أعيان البلاد للجهات المختصة بطلب منع ممارسة الرياضة التي كانت في نظرهم نوعا من المطاحنة والعداء و الكسر .
وفي عام 1367هـ ( 1947) شهدت الرياضة السعودية نقلة نوعية . حينما أولى الأمير عبدالله الفيصل وزير الداخلية حينها الرياضة اهتماما كبيرا ووجد في الإتحاد نواة طيبة لمستقبل رياضي مشرق . وحضر لأول مرة مباراة بين الإتحاد والمنتخب البريطاني للبوارج التي أقيمت عام 1369 هـ (1949) وفاز بها الإتحاد . وتكفل بعدها الامير بنقل الفريق إلى القاهرة للتعرف عن كثب عن كرة القدم المتقدمة آنذاك في مصر . وبالتالي اخذت الرياضة في هذه الفترة تقف على أبواب صيغة رسمية حكومية تمخضت عن الأعتراف الرسمي بها وتشكيل جهاز تنظيمي حكومي لها في عام 1372هـ (1952).
ويمكن التاريخ لنهاية مرحلة التأسيس وتكوين وتجميع الخبرات وتراكمها بعام 1377هـ حيث أقيمت أول مسابقة رسمية في المملكة، كان الإتحاد قبل إقامة تلك المسابقة في مرحلة شهدت الكثير من الشد والجذب بين أن يكون أو لا يكون.لكنه كان أيضاً في أوجه مجده. حيث انهالت عليه الانتصارات والحوافز. شهدت تلك الفترة الإتحادية كما طالعنا لقاءات مع فرق الجاليات المختلفة ثم فرق خارج الوطن في رحلته الأولى لـمصر. ومع كل هذا الزخم لم يهمل الإتحاد التباري مع الفرق الوطنية ويمكننا القول أن المنافسات مع هذه الفرق المثيلة في مكة وجدة كانت منافسات ساخنة وأوارها مشتعل بأكثر من المباريات التي كانت تقام بين الإتحاد والجاليات.

بداية المسابقات الرسمية

أقيمت أول مسابقة رسمية على نطاق المملكة وهي كأس جلالة الملك عام 1377هـ وأقيمت في العام نفسه مسابقة ولي العهد. ولم يوفق الإتحاد في السنة الأولى في نيل كأس الملك الذي نالته الوحدة. كما لم يوفق في منافسات كأس ولي العهد وهكذا وجد الإتحاد نفسه وقد خرج من الموسم الأول دون تتويج وبدأ يستعد للموسم القادم بلاعبين جدد. ولم يخب الإتحاد جماهيره وخطف اللقب بعد منافسة شرسة مع الوحدة . وبدءا من هذه الكأس سلك الإتحاد درب الذهب وصنع أمجاداً رائعة فقد فاز في تلك الفترة بكأس الملك لثلاث سنوات متتالية 1378هـ، 1379هـ، 1380هـ كما فاز بكأس سو ولي العهد (الوطنيون) في عام 1378هـ، 1379هـ، ثم عاد الإتحاد في عام 1383هـ وفاز بخمسة كؤوس: كأس الملك، كأس ولي العهد، كأس الطائرة, كأس تنس الطاولة ، كأس السلة.. ويعتبر ذلك الموسم (1383هـ) من أشهر المواسم التي احتكر فيها الإتحاد بطولات كل المنافسات على مستوى جميع الألعاب.

الملك يبدي إعجابه

وفي عام 1386هـ أدخلت رعاية الشباب تعديلاً على نظام الدوري فاختارت الأول والثاني من المناطق الثلاث (الغربية والوسطى والشرقية) للعب على الدوري الجديد (الدوري الممتاز) وهو من دورين انتهى الدور الأول وكان ترتيب الإتحاد المركز الأول. لكن تعذر إكمال الدور الثاني من هذا الدوري بسبب نكسة الخامس من حزيران. وتوج الإتحاد كئوسه بأن أستعاد كأس الملك لعام 1387هـ في واحدة من أقوى النهائيات القديمة وكان ذلك أمام النصر في الرياض وفاز بها الإتحاد 5/3 وساهمت تلك المباراة في شعبيته الجارفة كما أن الملك فيصل بن عبد العزيز أبدى إعجابه بالمستوى الذي قدمه الإتحاد وخاصة سعيد غراب والحارس تركي بافرط حيث أطلق على الغراب لقلب (العقاب) وأطلق على تركي بافرط لقب (خط ماجينو المكهرب).

السنوات العجاف .. وانفراج الازمة

رغم الإنجاز التاريخي الذي حققه الإتحاد في موسم 1387هـ إلا أن صعوده إلى القمة وتربعه عليها بذلك التميز أثار حفيظة البعض فأصيب الإتحاد بعين الحسد ، فقد دخل النادي مع مطلع عام 1388هـ مرحلة جديدة من الضياع والتشتت كانت مقدمة لأسوأ فترة مر بها النادي منذ تأسيسه حيث كان مهدداً بالانهيار والاندثار بعد أن ترك أعضاء الشرف فريقهم وهو ينهار .
حتى عام 1401 هـ حيث تولى رئاسة النادي صاحب سمو الملكي الأمير طلال بن منصور الذي أعاد التنيظم للنادي وتم حل مشكلة الديون المتراكمة وتعاقد مع العديد من المدربين الأكفاء وأشهرهم الألماني كرامر وتم التعاقد مع العديد من نجوم الكرة العربية والسعودية لكنه لم يحقق أي بطولة .
ثم تولى الرئاسة الأستاذ إبراهيم أفندي وكان النادي في ذروة اكتمال عناصر التفوق والاستعداد للبطولات وبالتالي تصادف قدوم هذه الإدارة مع تنظيم (الدوري المشترك) عام 1402هـ، ولما كان فريق كرة القدم مشبعاً بعدد كبير من النجوم الذين جلبهم الأمير طلال بن منصور فقد نجح الإتحاد في خوض منافسة قوية في الدوري المشترك ونجح إبراهيم أفندي في استثمار تلك القدرات وقاد النادي بحنكة واستطاع أن يتعاقد مع مدرب برازيلي كفء (شيزنهو) الذي استطاع أن يقود الإتحاد فنياً للفوز ببطولة الدوري المشترك ويعود به إلى منصات التتويج بعد غياب دام خمسة عشر عاماً. كان لهذه البطولة طعم خاص ومميز ووجدت عند الإتحاديين الكثير من الفرح والسرور والأمل في المزيد من البطولات، والأهم أنها فتحت الأبواب أمام شخصيات اتحادية كانت تتحفز لخدمة هذا النادي العريق من الداخل أمثال الدكتور عبد الفتاح ناظر الذي أسس البنية التحتية لكل التنظيمات الحديثة لنادي الإتحاد ودخل بالنا
