They submitted their request through the Prime Minister on 2
November and were granted an interview with Sir Reginald on the
13th. In their conversation with Sir Reginald they indicated their
expectation that both martial law and the Protectorate would soon
- be abolished; made clear their concern over the political future of Egypt; expressed their desire that Egypt should be heard in the councils of the peace talks in Paris; and referred to their expectation of independence. Wingate made it clear to them that he did not consider the interview as constituting an official conversation between Egyptians and the British government, bin merely as a friendly chat. He, in fact, told the Egyptian Prime Minister that he did not consider the Zaghlul delegation which met him to have any official capacity.
