INTAGLIO
Intaglio printing methods involves use of a metal plate to produce a print. In the process of printing, the machine place the ink settles at the lower level areas of the smooth surface of the plate. After the process, the printing plate, in placed in contact with a paper and passed through the machine roller press when under massive pressure. The process result into a situation where the paper is passed through sunken areas to be inked. The printing method uses various methods namely engraving, etching, and others. The essay explains the intaglio printing process using engraving and etching as elaborated by (Horn and Böker, 2010).
Hogarth discovered engraving process in the 18th. The process of Engraving involves cutting the design into the plate by use of furrows with an instrument commonly referred to as burin. The method requires a much careful control when cutting the paper. As a result, the paper produces a rather controlled style of image. Shading of the paper is accomplished through hatching. After the process is over, printing of the plate take place in a manner described above.
The next process of printing is referred to as etching. The process involves cutting of a metal plate and coating it with a material known as ground. After this, the artist draws the desired design on the ground with the use of a sharp needle that pass through to the ground of the metal placed below. After the plate is placed in an acid bath, the exposed surfaces are then etched. The results are sunken lines that are ready to receive the ink. Etching takes place on those parts that appear in colored areas.
