Make sure that every carton is properly binned and sealed at the bottom prior to packing.
Delicate items should be individually wrapped with news paper (or something similar).
Bubble wrap should be used to wrap crystal or very sensitive items. Bubble wrap protects furniture against bumps, scratches and dust. Use this material on: Glass, polished finishes, TV, etc.
Plastic also protects furniture against scratches, dust but most importantly water! Use this material on: Couches, beds, carpets, etc.
Pack cartons tight with enough cushioning between all the items inside.
When packing a carton, pack heavy items at the bottom and light items at the top; big items at the bottom and small items at the top.
Paper is heavy! Cartons with books (or any other papers) should be packed with lighter items to ensure a save all over weight.
Ensure cartons are left on a dry place.
Remember to mark all your cartons clearly with either a room or person's name (or any other prefered identification). This way, re-distribution afterwards becomes easier.
