Can a Proper Induction Into Custody in Prisons actually save lives?
I am an ex-prisoner.
Upon my release I was determined to show the SMT in each prison that unless their establishments run a proper, informative yet compassionate induction into custody the results could be catastrophic. Many prisons run induction courses/programs that last +/- one day. The reasons for this are many, but normally down to the fact that the prisons are over populated and under staffed. However as HMIP have reported the vast majority of prisons do not present a "meaningful" induction program. With over 50% of all self harm and suicides occurring in the first 3 months of custody, is it not high time we addressed this terrible situation?
